The End Result

The Personal Blog of THE Aaron Couch:

My Thoughts. My Opinions. My Experiences.

What Not To Do When A User Is Promoting Your Product Or Service: Try To Get Them To Sign Up AGAIN

Above is a conversation that I mentioned Republic Wireless in. I love engaging with companies on Twitter — especially active ones, but it’s always disappointing whenever they don’t remember who you are, or worse, don’t read your message correctly.

Maybe I don’t need to explain it in this post, but I was simply stating to Kelly that I would be open to trying a Windows Phone and hinting to RW that they should get one… they apparently skimmed my tweet and definitely didn’t look at the previous ones, or they wouldn’t have replied with what they said… telling me, an already current customer (which I feel my tweet to Kelly appropriately depicts me as), to try out their service.

The lesson is: read things twice before quickly responding. If you have a customer that’s halfway promoting you and halfway suggesting something to you… don’t try to recruit them, you’ve already done that once.

Oh Newt… why’d you go and do that? Now you’ve given pretty much everyone who disagrees with your otherwise good philosophies to slam you. Especially all the tech companies and organizations (mostly Liberal — which I’ve always thought it was ironic given the risk for a lack of Internet freedom motivated by none other than the Liberal Party, and some ignorant republicans that I refuse to include myself with.).

I understand what he’s trying to say. That the names smartphone or cellphone just don’t do the device justice. In fact, there’s a Gizmodo article to back up that thinking. But Newt, darn it… you’re making yourself look like an idiot. It’s simply called a smartphone. The name’s been around since the ’90s. Sometimes just let the chips fall where they may and accept the name that’s been placed to it. It’s primary function is still a phone, despite it’s other awesome capabilities. So I think it’s aptly named.

Second, why didn’t anyone stop him from filming this? Or at least help him tweak the message a little more and replace “cellphone” in the script with “smartphone”? He certainly has a staff who oversees all of these videos, right? None of them said anything?

Oh well. The damage is done. And a lot more is to come. It’s too bad he made this video. I understand what he’s saying — that it’s an incredible device and has so much more potential than even what we do with it, but the message here is all wrong and instead 99%, if not more, will focus on his “unintelligible” thinking that he doesn’t know what a smartphone is, which he does — he just didn’t convey that here.

If you want to see his defensive tweets backing up the video he made, look no further than his Twitter account:

Regarding the term smartphone… twitter.com/newtgingrich/s…

— Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich)
May 13, 2013

.@gizmodo on ‘smartphone,’ 2008 gizmodo.com/5061705/smartp…

— Newt Gingrich (@newtgingrich)
May 13, 2013

I thought what was said in the Update of the article at Fortune Tech was spot on:

[T]he term “smartphone” is pretty much universally used to apply to the device Gingrich was holding up in the video. But he never once used that term, even if only to argue against its use, as he did with “cellphone” and “handheld computer.” That, in fact, is what makes the video so bizarre. If it were an argument that we shouldn’t use the word “smartphone,” nobody would be making fun of the video. Or if they did make fun, it would be because the battle has already been won: it was decided years ago that “smartphone” is the term, and everybody knows what it means.

College BLogic Is Closing

This will be the final post on this blog.

I have decided to move my efforts to new things. College BLogic was a great run, but I’ve decided that I want to be more dedicated to other areas and blogs. I plan to continue to post about college life, tips and things on my on personal blog http://theendresult.tumblr.com. However, that won’t be the primary places for posting about college — which I’ve always been very passionate about. I plan to really start guest posting to many more blogs in the near future. I have already started working with some bloggers on this.

So, I’m sorry for the bad news, but you can continue to follow me personally on my Tumblr blog, Twitter (@aaronrcouch) and on my website that I recently created. Thanks for giving College BLogic a great run!

Miley Cyrus Death Threats on Twitter… WHAT?!

Today I read something quite surprising and actually very sad. Now some may not take this seriously and laugh or not agree with me… and honestly if you don’t agree, then I’m sorry.

I saw on Cnet today that Miley Cyrus deleted her Twitter account after numerous death threats. DEATH THREATS! WTF?! Really? You are threatening to kill someone over Twitter? ONE: that is very sad that you would even say that to someone, whether they are a celebrity or not (and her being a celebrity has nothing to do with my stand on this by the way). TWO: You did this publicly… on a social network.

Alright, so honestly, what is it about someone that makes you want to KILL them? No matter who they are, what they did, they’re a person and unless it’s a crime such as slaughtering babies, what did they do to deserve to be threatened to be killed? To me, threatening to kill someone is almost as bad as the action.

We all have souls and we all matter. We all have a place. How could you be so cold, so self-centered and so ignorant that you’d threaten to kill or wish death upon someone else? I don’t care who they are or who you are, that just isn’t right.

If SOPA passes here are ways to access sites

This is exactly why SOPA is completely useless and only infringes on our liberty and rights! It doesn’t even stop piracy!

Here is how to access sites in the event of a DNS takedown.

What’s your advice on Tumblr content for aspiring journalists? I will graduate college in May, and I’m already on the job search. How do you decide what to keep and delete on Tumblr?

stephanieannweaver asked npr:

Ideally you wouldn’t have published anything you needed to delete later in the first place. Not a lot dies on the Web.

You might take a look at Tumblrs by working journalists and see what kind of content they have posted to get an idea of what might be OK.

Good luck! — Tanya

Yes. You never post anything you don’t want EVERYONE to see. Especially on a private blog. Good advice.

Protest SOPA & PIPA With Me

Hey guys, I got this idea that I wanted to spread to you. Several of you have been active about spreading awareness and being aware on SOPA & PIPA. I got an idea we could put together a “conversation” on Facebook that then would be edited with blackout of the important subjects to bring awareness that even discussing or sharing copyrighted information could be threatened. Let me know if you’re interested and feel free to add any more of your friends who are active on SOPA and PIPA to this too! I think it’d be cool!

You can participate by sending a friend request on Facebook, a tweet on Twitter or we can even do it here right on Tumblr by sending me a message!

I found this Twitter conversation rather hilarious!  Charlie Todd, founder of Improv Everywhere, had a classic comeback. Made my day.
Kidding aside though, why would you want to shut down Improv Everywhere? All they do is make people’s days. And those who it offends don’t enjoy life anyway so they already wouldn’t be happy… Improv Everywhere doesn’t hurt anything or anyone. It only brings good to this world and the people in it.So my message to you all who are offended… Shut up. Smile. And enjoy life. That’s all. Thanks :D And feel free to reblog if you agree.

A Two-Week Social Media Fast

Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Blogs, everything!

My goal these next two weeks is to focus on grades (studying for finals particularly) and my true interests. “But Aaron, I thought your true interests were computers and technology?” It is… but I feel like it’s robbing me of my time, my school and my other interests which are more creative and probably contribute more to my life. These are things such as writing my novel, poems, movie scripts, jotting down ideas, reading, listening to self-help audio tracks, etc.

These things are going to be what I plan to achieve in the next couple weeks. I’m hoping that through this they’ll become a part of my daily life/routine after the “two week fast” is over.

I plan to record my thoughts each day and share them after the fast on my blog, but until then I won’t be blogging, tweeting, posting to facebook, watching youtube or aimlessly surfing the web.

Wish me luck! If you wish to join feel free to reblog or send me a tweet to let me know. (I’ll get it to my phone)

See you in two weeks!

I find it interesting how “idealistic” thoughts really are so much more appealing to society and people in general.

PART TWO: Things That Make Me Say “WTF Tumblr?” (And for those who are wondering… WTF stands for White’s Tree Frog)

This is ANOTHER random photo of a White’s Tree Frog:

Continued from Part One.

Now to the things that make me say “White’s Tree Frog Tumblr?” (Note: In the beginning this post began with 5 things and slowly grew to 9 as I was writing it… Who knows, maybe it’ll be even more by the time it gets posted)

Crappy in-text photo integration

Tumblr doesn’t format text around photos properly. This seems like a pretty simple thing to fix yet…. (note this is only IN the blog, not on the Dashboard)

But

it

doesn’t

really

work

well.

See

how

confusing

this

looks?

Pretty pathetic.

Tagging. There’s a difference between “photo” and “Photo”.
Don’t believe me? Try it… or maybe it’s just a flaw in Tumblr’s searching capabilities on my blog. Leading me to number five… Also, sometimes when tagging, I’ll start typing a previously-used tag and NOTHING will automatically show up… it happened in this post. I’ll have to save the changes and reopen the draft… sometimes that doesn’t even work.

Searching. I never get all the posts in the results that I search for.
I don’t know if its crappy tagging and crappy searching working together or if they just DON’T work together, but something needs to change here. I’d like to think that the effort I put into tagging my posts would directly reflect on the ease that my followers have of finding specific ones, but personally when I try to find one, it typically takes way too long and just isn’t very smooth. That is somewhat surprising in a product that is supposed to provide “simple blogging”.

…oh I’m not done yet. There’s more!

Doesn’t post to Twitter well at all!
The photo of my tweet below isn’t even close to 140 characters. One word! That’s all that was left—”down”—4 simple characters. Trust me I copied and pasted it into the Twitter field again all and it wasn’t past the limit. WHITE’S TREE FROG TUMBLR?

And what’s with the long URL? Just integrate with bit.ly and have your own link shortening app such as “tum.blr/” or “tumb.lr” — problem solved!

So what are your thoughts on all of these? Did I miss any?

About

Hey! My name is Aaron Couch. I'm 24 years old and this is where I write about things I care about, from my own personal beliefs to sharing about experiences to technology to anything dealing with animals, specifically exotics.

More About Me: I actually just moved to Idaho from Nebraska to explore amazing new opportunities, get out on my own, and be closer to my incredible girlfriend.

I'm a Vet Assistant graduate and am currently writing for MakeUseOf, while looking for opportunities in the exotic animal husbandry, rescue and rehabilitation, and research fields of work. Previously, I interned at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha from June 2012 up to when I left for Idaho in May 2013.

I'm an exotic animal & herp enthusiast and love mountain biking, writing, photography and the outdoors.

While you're here, check out the 30-Day 'Best Times with Friends' Challenge that I did a while back. Basically I chose a random photo of me with my friends and wrote about the story behind that photo. It was an awesome exercise!
