The End Result

The Personal Blog of THE Aaron Couch:

My Thoughts. My Opinions. My Experiences.

Alright. So this is my “JustMovedInDon’tEvenHaveEverythingUnpackedButThis’llDoForNow” home for Victoria, my Ornate Box Turtle. Unfortunately, I had to leave her other home at my dad’s when I moved because I have a Honda Civic and well… look at it:

The thing is half the size of my car. So I’m on the search for something nicer. I have a lot of ideas, but I thought I’d also ask and see if any of you had some thoughts as to what I should do. Here are a couple photos that I thought were awesome and I plan to use as inspiration.

As you can see, I’m leaning more towards a plastic, preferably Rubbermaid, container this time. I don’t have the time and/or resources right now to build a wooden enclosure, although eventually that’s what I plan to do again.
What do you guys think? Do you have any suggestions or ideas?

Tech Pet Peeve: Random Facebook Friending (AKA Power Friending)

I know I’m not alone here — we’ve all had those friend requests from people we don’t know — some who have a few friends in common, and others who are completely random. And although I feel this happens more to girls than guys (because of all the creepers out there), I’ve had my fair share as well. I noticed a particular increase when I started writing for MakeUseOf. So I changed my settings so that only friends of friends could add me, and only the rest could follow.

Here’s the pet peeve of mine though: When I get random invites from people who I have one, maaayyybe two friends in common with, and they send to message prior as to why they’re adding me. If it’s just random people doing this, I would just classify it as random friending, but whenever it’s on a more professional level and they have thousands of “friends”, I call it power friending.

image

Facebook is actually an awesome network — I really like it. But I wish they would do a few things help connections be more personal.

Now I’ll admit — there was a time when I did this, but it was on accident.Upon looking at someone’s profile (not sure why I was looking at her’s again), I somehow added her and didn’t realize it. Don’t know how. It just happened. So whenever she confirmed the request, I got a notification and was quite surprised at what had happened and how it had happened. So I sent her a message…

image

So. From now on, if there is someone you’d like to add… first look to see if they have the follow button. This allows you to see only what they make public, which depending on what their profile looks like, might be a lot.

image

There are several people whom I follow that I know decently — meeting through Twitter or blogs, etc. and even Skyping with, but don’t know them well enough to want to be their friend.

Secondly, send a stinking message! It takes two seconds and is a great way to start the conversation with them instead of being a weird creeper person who just adds people and then never says “Hi! This is why I added you”. Honestly, if you don’t feel there’s a need to message someone and you don’t know them, don’t bother adding them either. Now, if you know someone fairly well, you don’t need to send a message, however if it’s been a while since you talked… why not send one?

In addition to all of this, this is even more important on a professional level. If you’re representing your business, brand or even just yourself, don’t do this. In fact, don’t do a lot of things, but this is certainly one of the big ones.

—End of rant—

Courage among the cowards: woman stands up to ax wielding killers

It’s not just about gun control or religion or rights. It’s about the direction this world is going. It’s about how parents are raising their children. It’s about being in fear of standing up for not just what you believe it… but what is right. I fear that even this post will be slammed because of the misdirection of our generation. I don’t know how you could disagree with Glenn Beck here. He’s spot on. Here’s some of what he says in the video below:

“There was one individual that stood up. One,” “It was a woman that stood up. In fact, she didn’t stand up. She first had to stand up, reach up, pull the little string to ring the bell so the bus would stop that she was on, so she got off the bus because she saw blood in the streets. She looked around all the sheep being led right directly to slaughter and walked up to the guy with the blood on his hands.”

“This woman approached him, confronted him. She then looked back at the crowd with contempt and disgust. You know what made her stand up in the bus? She said her Christian belief. She’s a Catholic. Her Christian belief. When she found out it wasn’t an accident, why did she pursue him? Because she said there were children there and she didn’t ‑‑ better to happen to her than a child.”

“Where were the rest of the sheep?”

Wow! Quite interesting stuff!
rorschachx:

Male strawberry poison frogs (Oophaga pumilio) work hard to woo the opposite sex with constant and intense vocalizations until they find a mate. But a new study indicates that all this effort is for naught. Researchers have found that despite the male’s best efforts to impress, females simply mate with the closest frog to them. By choosing a neighbor, females minimize the risk of not mating at all, as receptive females abound and they have only a short time to fertilize their eggs. Although this behavior may seem careless, it is the optimal approach in a system where males are constantly fighting to secure a territory, the team reports this month in Frontiers in Zoology. Females can simply choose the closest frog as, after their fighting, all victorious males with an established territory are of an acceptable standard to mate. Why go further afield, when the guy next door is just as good? The males’ elaborate courtship display is still essential, however, to ensure females can hear them. Shy and silent males go dateless.

Question: What is Facebook hoping to accomplish with “highlighed” posts? Seriously though…

Previously to Facebook’s recent Timeline update, highlighting a post meant that it would stand out — taking up the whole page horizontally — which quickly would grab your friends’ attention.

But now, there’s just a blue ribbon…

image

But maybe that’s just my view right? Perhaps whenever you actually see it from the public’s or a friend’s view it’ll be different…

image

Well… I don’t see how that’s highlighted… maybe I’m doing something wrong. So I went to Facebook’s help center and “asked”, Facebook, how do I star a post and what does starring a post do?

image

Hmm… well that wasn’t very helpful. Way to go into depth on that one Facebook.

So now I have honestly no idea what “highlighting” does for posts. Perhaps Facebook will launch a feature in the future that allows you to click Highlighted in the Timeline and view all of that person’s highlights in their feed. That wouldn’t be a bad feature. But right now… it doesn’t do anything on my friends’ and followers’ end and only puts a little blue ribbon on my end.

Facebook, perhaps you should give yourself a gold star for creating such a fantastic and useful feature… [sarcasm]

Do you have any insight on this?

Yes! I’ve been pronouncing it correctly all along!

Jif, the popular peanut butter company, has finally weighed in on the debate about how to pronounce GIF:

It’s pronounced Jif® #Jif #GIF bit.ly/10QjQim

In other (very random) news… I recently made a bunch of sandwiches for a roadtrip using the “Reduced Fat” Jif and was hardly able to force it down — and I eat anything. Needless to say, the rest of the sandwiches went to waste. Sad really.

About

Hey! My name is Aaron Couch. I'm 24 years old and this is where I write about things I care about, from my own personal beliefs to sharing about experiences to technology to anything dealing with animals, specifically exotics.

More About Me: I actually just moved to Idaho from Nebraska to explore amazing new opportunities, get out on my own, and be closer to my incredible girlfriend.

I'm a Vet Assistant graduate and am currently writing for MakeUseOf, while looking for opportunities in the exotic animal husbandry, rescue and rehabilitation, and research fields of work. Previously, I interned at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha from June 2012 up to when I left for Idaho in May 2013.

I'm an exotic animal & herp enthusiast and love mountain biking, writing, photography and the outdoors.

While you're here, check out the 30-Day 'Best Times with Friends' Challenge that I did a while back. Basically I chose a random photo of me with my friends and wrote about the story behind that photo. It was an awesome exercise!
